Undergraduate students immersed themselves in the culture of an emerging economy this summer through the Eller Global Cohort. For ten weeks, they lived and learned in Bangalore, India — the fast-growing Indian metropolis, where ancient culture and modern prosperity combine... and collide.

While in Bangalore, the 56 students lived at the Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship, a graduate school with a small-campus environment. The students completed eight weeks of courses, with two weeks of travel to Mysore, Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.

Business management majors Logan Rouse and Tyler Chase wrote about their experiences on the Eller International Blog.

Rouse encountered a group of children playing cricket in Bangalore. “They immediately ran up to me, asking me where I was from and what I was doing in India,” said Rouse. “With the little English they knew, I was able to ask if I could play with them.” The kids helped him pick up the game, and they began to draw a crowd. “I ended up meeting a few people my age who are studying finance in Bangalore,” he said.

While the students were on travel break between their classes, they visited tourist sites and corporate operations, including the Infosys campus. “Infosys is a software testing company that knows how to take care of its employees,” said Chase. “The campus is full of fitness centers, pools, movie theaters, and even bowling alleys.”

“India offers a number of challenges but more opportunities to discover such a beautiful country with traditional cultures and values,” he added.
