Eller College Announces Partnership with City University of Hong Kong

Top-ranked Eller Department of MIS to offer dual-degree program aimed at Chinese graduate students.

TUCSON, Ariz. – June 15, 2010 – The University of Arizona’s Department of Management Information Systems (MIS) at the Eller College announced today a partnership with City University of Hong Kong (CityU) to offer a joint, 15-month dual-degree program resulting in a master’s of business information systems from CityU and a master’s in MIS from the UA.

The institutions created the partnership in response to demand for skilled workers to lead the booming Chinese financial services industry. The growing affluence of China’s middle class is enabling increasing numbers of these workers to seek graduate education abroad.

While established international centers of finance such as New York and London are still recovering from the economic crisis, China is moving aggressively to play a larger role in the global financial industry. In March, the Chinese State Department gave the green light to fund the growth of Shanghai, already China’s economic powerhouse, into an international financial center and global shipping hub by 2020.

While many Chinese business schools have rushed to establish or expand finance programs, there is a critical gap remaining: these workers will also be called upon to tackle increasingly complex technical challenges, both strategic and operational, that are specific to the industry.

The Department of MIS at the Eller College — ranked among the nation’s top five by U.S. News and World Report since the rankings’ inception — co-created a dual-degree program with CityU that is designed to help Chinese workers meet these new challenges.

Students admitted to the program will complete the initial component at CityU in Hong Kong. Then they’ll spend four months in Tucson working on 14 of the required 32 UA credits. They will complete the remaining UA credits upon their return to China.

“We continue to lead schools around the country with our MIS programs,” said Eller College dean Paul Portney. “And there are significant opportunities to expand our global reputation by partnering with strong institutions abroad while helping to prepare new graduates to succeed.”

The program will begin its pilot phase in summer 2011.
