Beyond the Classroom : Talking Gender and the Workplace with Pioneering Executive Susan Bulkeley Butler
October 2010

BSBA Business Management '10
Susan Butler, CEO of the Susan Bulkeley Butler Institute for Development of Women Leaders and member of the Eller College National Board of Advisors, joined Eller College dean Paul Portney and students from the Professional Women in Business Association and the National Association of Women MBAs for an informal Q&A session on her newest book, Women Count: A Guide to Changing the World.
An audience of about 30 students and faculty gathered for the October 4 event. Butler offered insight from her career with Arthur Andersen to relay her message to young women that gender equity in the boardroom is essential. Butler spoke at length about the importance of having a mentor, of networking, and of speaking up to gain respect in the still male-dominated corporate world.
Through case studies of successful women, Butler’s book illustrates strategic actions to take in order to change the workplace, community, and beyond. She discusses the necessity for a percentage change in female versus male elected and appointed positions, corporate boards, firms, and senior-level management teams.
