Beyond the Classroom : Eller Zipperman Scholars Visit the Phoenix Suns
March 2010
By Trevor Diddell, BSBA Marketing '10
In February, 52 pre-business students traveled to Phoenix for a behind-the-scenes look at U·S Airways Center operations, where the National Basketball Association's Phoenix Suns play.
The students are all Zipperman Scholars, members of a competitive program designed to give freshman and sophomore pre-business majors additional exposure to management information systems (MIS) and career opportunities in the field.
Phoenix Suns vice presidents of digital and information technology, Jeramie McPeek and William Bolt, welcomed the students with a presentation on the Suns’ website development and revenue optimization. The students also learned about strategic IT changes the organization has made in the last ten years and their impact on the organization.
The scholars asked about IT employment opportunities, and Bolt said the organization would be hiring in IT down the line. “We are finding that the way technology is changing and developing, we will need people who have SQL, system analysis and design, and web development skills that will help us leverage the internet to its fullest potential.”
