Governance and Social Responsibility : New Certificate Program Serves Public Sector Managers

Building on the success of the regional, five-day Southwest Leadership Program, Eller introduced a new certificate program for public sector leaders this spring. The program, Foundations of Public Sector Leadership, launched in April with a capacity enrollment of 45.
“The idea is to prepare mid-level managers for the challenges of leading local government in today’s ever-evolving environment,” said Paul Melendez, director of the Southwest Leadership Program. “At no other time has the need for the delivery of the highest-quality local government management training been more urgent.”
Melendez designed the program with John Leavitt, assistant chief of police with Tucson Police Department. “This program is important to us because it gave our newest managers a head start in their jobs,” said Leavitt, who sent 12 officers to participate. “We will experience unprecedented turnover among managers in the next few years, and this will help us prepare.”
