Trump's Tariff Obsession: Will It Succeed?

President Donald Trump has joked that 'tariff' is the most beautiful word in the dictionary . . . and he has imposed a lot of them. What is the president seeking to achieve through these tariffs and might they work? Will tariff help make America great again, or raise prices and depress the economy? This lecture will evaluate Trump's trade policy and the historic US break from free trade.

Douglas Irwin is the John French Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Irwin is the author of several books including Clashing over Commerce: A History of U.S. Trade Policy (University of Chicago Press, 2017), which The Economist and Foreign Affairs selected as one of their Best Books of the Year.

Douglas Irwin is an expert on both past and present U.S. trade policy, especially policy during the Great Depression, and is frequently sought by media outlets such as The Economist and Wall Street Journal to provide comment and/or opinion on current events. He also writes op-eds and articles about trade for mainstream media outlets like The New York Times, and Financial Times.

Douglas Irwin worked on trade policy issues while on the staff of President Ronald Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers and later worked in the International Finance Division at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. Before joining Dartmouth, Irwin taught at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business.
