A Competition with Winners All Around
The Evening MBA cohorts of Phoenix and Tucson went head to head in August and September to participate in a food and supplies drive for regional nonprofits.
Phoenix donations went to the Phoenix Rescue Mission to benefit men, women, and children who struggle with homelessness, addiction, and trauma. Tucson’s donations went to Youth on Their Own, which benefits homeless teens who are trying to finish high school.
“These organizations were chosen because they are both in need of a wide variety of supplies such as school supplies, food, and personal care items,” Michell Bauer, a producer with Arizona Health Sciences Biocommunications and member of the Phoenix cohort, said. “This gave students the option to contribute a variety of items, and the contest between the cities was fair because both organizations accepted the same things. Gift cards to Wal-Mart or Target and cash were accepted as well.”
The items donated were tracked by a point system and the points were assigned by the average cost of the item. In the end, according to Bauer, Tucson brought in 1,939 points and Phoenix brought in 779.
Over $2,700 worth of supplies was raised between the two cities, a win for both MBA cohorts and two local nonprofits.
