Internship Spotlight – Jeff Siegler, IBM

Jeff Siegler is a Management Information Systems major and is set to graduate in the spring of 2021.  This past summer he interned for IBM as a Business Data Analyst in Connecticut.

How did you get this internship?

I completed an online application and then I had an on-site interview at an IBM office before being given an offer for the summer.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

My favorite part was the IBM CIO 24 hour intern Hackathon at the company headquarters. My team presented in front of 3 IBM VPs and we won “Most Innovative” for our Watson Assistant chatbot that would help new hires with the complex on-boarding process.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

I analyzed financial information for 80+ countries for data localization in preparation for migration to a new inter- company accounting system. This included learning PL/1 and JCL coding. Also I had to communicate my findings to developers and product owners.

What did you find most challenging about your internship?

Learning the guidelines needed for being a part of such a large company that works an a global scale. Also learning how to operate mainframe data systems.

How did Eller prepare you for your internship?

My accounting 200 and 210 courses were very useful when I was looking at accounting systems. Also becoming proficient in Excel during BNAD 276 helped me a lot from the start.

Did your internship employer provide housing or transportation assistance?

Transportation – My employer provided transportation or financially supplemented my transportation during the internship

Anything else you would like to share about your internship experience?

I am continuing my work for IBM remotely from Tucson as a Co-op in the fall and spring.
