Jeff Schatzberg, vice dean and Frances McClelland Chair in Accounting, has been named dean in an interim role of the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona, effective August 23, 2021. Schatzberg succeeds Paulo Goes, who served as dean and Halle Chair in Leadership since March 2016. The process for selecting a new permanent dean will commence this year.

Schatzberg has served as the director of the Dhaliwal-Reidy School of Accountancy since 2016 and previously served as dean in an interim role from 2015-16. He has successfully fundraised for several Eller College initiatives, including the Professional Development Center and the naming of the Dhaliwal-Reidy School of Accountancy. He earned his PhD from the University of Iowa in 1987. He joined the Eller College faculty in 1987.

Schatzberg has widely published his research in the most prestigious accounting journals, primarily utilizing the experimental economics methodology. He also has served on numerous editorial review boards of accounting journals.

As a researcher and teacher, Schatzberg has been recognized for his achievements in academia, including from the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants, and has received multiple teaching awards from Eller students, and was the recipient of the McLaughlin Prize for Ethics in Accounting Research. A certified public accountant, he is a member of the American Accounting Association and the Economic Science Association.

In acknowledging the legacy of his predecessor, Schatzberg said, “Paulo Goes has been an exceptional leader to whom the Eller and Arizona community owe a debt of gratitude. He achieved many notable accomplishments during his tenure as dean, including growing Eller’s online graduate program portfolio, raising more than $30 million, launching the digital innovation and technology initiative and prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion.”

In his new role as dean in an interim role, Schatzberg will continue to focus on several key areas, including efforts to increase the diversity and inclusiveness of the Eller community, maintaining the top-rankings of many Eller programs and engaging alumni.

Outgoing Dean Paulo Goes will join the Freeman School of Business at Tulane University.
