Ashland Johnson '24 (BSBA Marketing & Film and Television) is a Social Media & Content Associate for Arizona Illustrated at Arizona Public Media.

What was the process for getting this job?

I found the Social Media & Content Associate job on Handshake, a job and career development platform used by the University of Arizona. After I applied, I interviewed virtually with two of the Arizona Illustrated producers, and ultimately received a job offer a few weeks later.

What type of projects do you work on?

My responsibilities include creating and posting content for all of the Arizona Illustrated social media accounts (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook). My day to day projects vary from creating new ways to promote our stories, to designing graphics on Canva, to going out on location with producers to shoot behind the scenes content. As I post, I look at data from follower engagement to help me develop new promotional strategies that can be used in the future.

What is your favorite part of the experience?

My favorite parts about this job are the hands-on digital marketing experience, as well as being able to share compelling stories from around the Tucson community.

What are you learning?

At Arizona Illustrated, I am learning how to use data on follower engagement to make more informed marketing decisions.

What advice do you have for other students looking for similar experiences?

One piece of advice I would give to other students looking for similar experiences would be to network with professionals in their desired industry. I would also suggest that students network with their peers by joining Eller clubs.

How has Eller prepared you for this experience?

My involvement within the Business of Entertainment Club and Eller of African American Honorary prepared me for the professional world. In both clubs, I had the opportunity to go through professional development which aided me in securing my current job with Arizona Illustrated. In both clubs, members are able to partake in resume, cover letter, and Linkedin workshops
