Elisa Magallanes '24 BSBA (Accounting & Communications ) was an Investment Banking Summer Analyst at Wells Fargo Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina.

What was the process of getting this internship, job, or summer experience?

To receive this internship I applied for the future leaders' summit and underwent two rounds of technical and behavioral interviews.

What was a typical day like?

A typical day at the office entailed a series of client calls and project tasks in Excel and PowerPoint. These tasks typically connected other sources of financial data and news such as FactSet and Pitchbook to a centralized layout. These tasks helped our teams create an organized perspective of a company's financials that were consistent and presentable to our clients. As interns, we also had daily mentorship calls with senior bankers and weekly intern events allowing us to connect with other students.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

This summer I really enjoyed the scenery of Charlotte. Though the city is filled with tall buildings and urban areas there are many beautiful lakes and parks that made it easy to disconnect from the frenzy of the work week. I really enjoyed boating with my team and taking lunchtime strolls through the city's parks.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

My favorite project this summer involved building a financial model displaying information on recent mergers and acquisitions within my business sector. The model was a dynamic representation of the history and financials of each deal and how the company adjusted after the transaction. Additionally, the model was used to reference potential targets for Merger/Acquisition within my sector. I really enjoyed learning more about how each deal transpired and the specific mechanics of each transaction. I felt the work I invested in this project had a tangible effect that facilitated the work of others.

What did you find most challenging?

Throughout my time in this internship, I often had trouble keeping up with the fast-paced environment that surrounded me. At first, it was difficult to acclimate to the constantly changing tasks and explanations. Additionally, my skills in excel and PowerPoint were not very advanced. However, as the summer progressed I found that my skillset and understanding of the job increased exponentially. The intensity of the ten weeks resulted in a very satisfactory growth in my knowledge and understanding. This summer definitely expanded my ability to adapt to rigorous environments.

What did you learn?

This summer brought many learning opportunities. The lessons I treasured the most involved my soft skills and ability to communicate effectively. I learned to respectfully and authentically interact with others, and work in a team environment that delivered honest and excellent work products.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar experience, or advice for future students to be successful?

For students looking for similar opportunities, I would advise them to believe in themselves! The opportunities are out there and you need to run to them. Do not feel insecure because of your school, GPA, or identity. You are more than capable of achieving your goals. Work hard and give back in kindness and opportunity will follow. Also, MEET WITH YOUR CAREER COACHES and GO TO OFFICE HOURS.

How did Eller Prepare you for this experience?

Eller gave me great teamwork abilities that helped me work efficiently as a team member in this role. Eller faculty were also great pillars of support that gave me the confidence to embark on this journey and believe in my own abilities to be successful.

Did you feel supported by the company or organization you worked with?

The company did a great job of connecting us to mentors throughout our ten week program.
