Internship Spotlight: Luke McCoy, EY

Luke McCoy '23 BSBA (Accounting) was an Assurance Intern at EY in Phoenix, Arizona.

What was the process of getting this internship, job, or summer experience?

I applied to my Summer 2022 internship during my Fall 2021 semester. A lot of times companies such as the Big 4 will begin their application process very early so it is important to keep that in mind. Also, meet the firms was also very helpful in landing my internship. I would encourage all undergraduates regardless of year to attend that event.

What was a typical day like?

A typical day in the office started at about 8:15 or 8:30 which was usually when everyone on the team had arrived to the office. Typically, our first meeting would be around 10 and served as a weekly check in between colleagues that the entire team attended. After that, the team would split off to work on their individual tasks. At about 12 each day we would go out to lunch as a team which one of my favorite parts of the experience. It really helped me to get to know my team better. After that I would typically work on what was assigned to me earlier that day and leave the office at around 4:30.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

My favorite part of my internship experience with EY was our 2022 Futures Conference which was held in Orlando, Florida. Each intern from every US office and even a few international offices were flown to Orlando to network, get to know your colleagues in your respective office, and enjoy a day in DisneyWorld. It was a 5 day experience that I will never forget and it excited me for my future career at such a great company.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

I had the opportunity to work on one of our largest client engagements over the first half of my internship. My team had over 10 colleagues ranging from Staff  to Partner. Another intern and I were tasked with converting prior year work papers and helping keep the audit database organized. It was a great experience and taught me a lot about my future career.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar experience, or advice for future students to be successful?

My advice to students looking for a Big 4 internship would be to stay aware and informed. Even though I applied in the Fall before my internship, many companies begin the application process up to a year in advance to it is always smart to check Handshake. If you do land an internship, be yourself! A lot of what companies are looking for is how you interact within a team setting.
