Internship Spotlight: Haoran Li, GFOAz

Image

Haoran Li '23 BSBA (Accounting & Management Information Systems) was a Financial Clerk Intern at GFOAz in Phoenix, Arizona.

What was the process of getting this internship, job, or summer experience?

I saw the flyer from Nancy and I asked her to send me the application form. I attended the interview and didn't get it first time, then I talked to a few CFO during the accounting panel, and I got it during my junior year.

What was a typical day like?

We started with 8:30 meeting to catch up and update, then we started working with the team and see if we need more individual time. Afternoon is pretty much just individual tasks and preparation for tomorrow's 8:30 meeting.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

The time is really flexible, my supervisor provided me the best access I could get and the projects that I can dive in.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

One thing that we did is create the virtual structure for the other summer interns. We started with some ideas and an agenda. We created details with each step so that we can provide better for the intern. We also got all the contacts that I felt was necessary for all the interns.

What did you find most challenging?

Completely virtual is challenging for me. I was only able to meet my boss in person during the conference in Tucson.

What did you learn?

Working and schooling are different for sure.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar experience, or advice for future students to be successful?

I suggest finding the right contact cause government agencies are usually pretty set so you should always have one primary contact.

How did Eller Prepare you for this experience?

Nancy is the best.

Did you feel supported by the company or organization you worked with?

Absolutely 100%. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested.
