Born and raised in Tucson, America Guerrero ’23 BSBA (Accounting) was a Wildcat since her parents began taking her to University of Arizona basketball and football games at a young age. “I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the fans, as well as the beautiful campus,” she says.

When the time came for her to decide where she wanted to take her studies, she knew that the Eller College of Management was the best choice for her and her career path in Accounting. “I did my research on all business schools in Arizona to ensure I was picking the best one and it of course ended up being the Eller College,” says Guerrero.

As a first-generation student, Guerrero faced multiple challenges throughout her time at Eller and felt like she had to go through them alone. “I constantly felt like I never fit in and doubted my abilities,” she says. “I felt like a fraud.”

After joining several clubs in the Eller College, including LEAD (Leadership, Empowerment and Academic Development) and Eller Hispanic Honorary, Guerrero started to feel more at home. “I was surrounded by like-minded individuals who had similar goals to mine and had gone through the same struggles as I had,” she says. “It helped me see that we are all unique in our own way and we should embrace it—not hide it from others. Guerrero was also part of the Accounting Student Association and participated in Eller Make a Difference Day.

During the summer of 2022, Guerrero had the chance to be a BCAP coach. The BCAP (Business Careers Awareness Program) at Eller is hosted by Ernst & Young for underrepresented high school juniors. These students get the opportunity to explore business careers, learn more about the University and become more involved in the Eller community. “This opportunity has allowed me to give back to the students in my community,” says Guerrero. “Which is something I am extremely happy to do.” Not only will Guerrero be a BCAP coach this coming summer, she will also be interning at Ernst & Young as an Assurance intern for the summer.

Guerrero says that her time at the Eller College has prepared her for her future in more ways than one—from perfecting her public speaking skills to giving her the confidence to put herself out there and go for things that are out of her comfort zone.

Moving forward, Guerrero will begin the Master of Accounting program at the Eller College beginning Fall 2023 as one of ten students that were selected for the Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholars Program. “I am extremely honored to have been selected to represent the inaugural class of DFASP,” she says. “It is with the help of this scholarship that I will be able to continue my accounting education.
