One networking strategy that has been particularly effective for me in building valuable connections is what I like to call strategic generosity. This approach involves offering help or value to others without immediately expecting anything in return. 

In practice, it can be as simple as sharing relevant industry insights, offering introductions to other professionals, or providing feedback on a project. The key is to genuinely contribute to someone else's success or knowledge base. This approach has helped me establish strong, trust-based relationships in the business world.

What makes strategic generosity impactful is its focus on building rapport and a reputation as a helpful and knowledgeable individual in your network. People tend to remember those who helped them when they needed it and are often more willing to reciprocate or stay connected. 

It's a long-term strategy, not a quick win, but it's incredibly effective. It has led me to not just expand my network, but to fill it with meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships. By putting the priority on the needs of others, you make yourself a priority to them. One key networking strategy that has greatly shaped my entrepreneurial journey is the belief in the power of helping others. Zig Ziglar's famous quote, “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help other people get what they want,” struck a chord with me early on in my career. A mentor shared Ziglar's wisdom with me, and it has since become the guiding principle of my networking philosophy.

This approach is rooted in the idea that by genuinely offering assistance to others without always expecting something in return, you can foster meaningful relationships. It's about promptly following through on your commitments and having an innate desire to go above and beyond. 

For example, my first TEDx talk opportunity arose from such a mindset. I organically developed a friendship with someone purely out of mutual respect and interest, without any knowledge of their professional roles or how they could benefit me. It was through this authentic connection that I unknowingly impressed a TEDx curator. They, recognizing my passion and potential, jokingly suggested to my wife that I should approach them about speaking at TEDx. 

This opportunity came to fruition not because I sought it directly, but because I developed a positive professional reputation and nurtured relationships without expecting returns. Thus, this experience reinforced my belief in focusing on how I can assist others, which, in turn, led to an unexpected platform to share my ideas.

I've witnessed firsthand how this mindset, combined with a commitment to exceeding expectations, can lead to not only a vast expansion of your network but also the development of deeper and more valuable connections. In summary, embracing a “how can I help” attitude and consistently delivering on your promises can exponentially enhance both the quantity and quality of relationships in your network.

Join Continuing Education Programs for Networking

One strategy that really works for me is to join Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs, because I work in the legal industry. For those in other industries, continuing education programs can be an excellent opportunity to network.

Being part of CLE programs is important for keeping up with legal matters, but it's also a great chance to meet other lawyers. I make the most of workshops, seminars, and online classes because they are great places to meet legal experts from various areas. These programs have been instrumental in expanding my professional network and have opened doors to numerous collaborative opportunities. 

Engaging in these educational settings allows for meaningful exchanges of ideas and experiences, fostering relationships that are beneficial both professionally and personally.
