Chloe Berglind '27 (BSBA Accounting) was a Discovery 1 Intern at Deloitte in Tempe, AZ.

I am from Arizona so I didn't need housing. I lived at home, but others mentioned how they asked the recruiter for some interns info so they could live together, and they gave a sign-on bonus that you could put toward living expenses.

What was the process for getting this internship, job, or summer experience?

I applied through Handshake and then the recruiter, Julia, who is awesome, reached out a couple days later and I did an interview and heard back. Soon after, I got an offer. They fill the positions on a rolling basis.

What was a typical day like?

I would arrive at the office around 8 AM, log onto my computer, and check my emails and Teams messages. Then, I would review my calendar for the day. Usually, I would join a morning meeting for the project or assignment we were working on. After that, I would hop onto another meeting with my team to discuss our approach and delegate tasks.

I also took a Business Chemistry test and participated in bonding activities to get to know my team better and help us collaborate more effectively. After our team meeting, we would get to work and stay in contact to ask questions or assist each other.

The other three Discovery 1 interns and I reserved a room where we worked together, which was nice because we could talk and collaborate in person. We each had an advisor for our projects who provided feedback, and both advisors were fantastic.

We had to create presentations to deliver to judges and professionals for both projects, which was really fun and provided valuable feedback. There were usually daily deliverables or guidelines and tasks to follow. At the end of the day, we held debrief meetings and progress checks.

I also attended lunch or coffee chats daily to network with professionals, which was a great experience. Throughout my internship, I had a coach and an onboarding advisor available to answer any questions and support me.

Additionally, I got to socialize and bond with the other interns in the office through activities like pickleball, Topgolf, and lunches. I shadowed professionals to see their daily work, observe different clients and tasks, learn about Deloitte platforms, and hear about their experiences.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

My favorite part was getting to do the presentations and practicing like real world problem solving and all the networking and shadowing opportunities.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

Our first project was an acquisition case, where we analyzed two companies through the lenses of Audit, Tax, Consulting, and Risk & Financial Advisory. It taught me so much about Deloitte’s different service lines and how they support clients. Huge thanks to our passionate advisor Ansel Li for his incredible support and insight!

The second was an Innovation project, where we were tasked with developing ways a nonprofit could utilize AI to improve its operations. This project really tested our creativity and problem-solving, and we were fortunate to receive such thoughtful guidance from Lillian Ray. We were even recognized by the CEO of the nonprofit, who expressed that our team did amazing and that they would absolutely explore our options.

What did you find most challenging?

I found the freedom challenging but also amazing. I had to really utilize time management and organizational skills to plan all my own networking and shadowing opportunities while balancing meetings with my team and other mandatory ones, so I could get the most out of this experience.

What did you learn?

During my Deloitte internship, I learned the importance of networking and shadowing to gain real-world insights and grow professionally. I developed problem-solving skills by researching, brainstorming, and being creative while working on complex projects across multiple service lines. Collaborating with a team across different time zones taught me valuable time management skills and how to communicate effectively. Most importantly, the experience confirmed my interest in pursuing Audit and showed me to make the most of every opportunity by being a sponge for knowledge.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar experience, or advice for future students to be successful?

My advice for other students looking for a similar experience is to fully embrace every opportunity you are given. You can learn valuable lessons from any situation, whether it relates to your personal life, professional growth, or academics. Approach your experience with a growth mindset, be a sponge for knowledge and stay open to constantly learning and improving. Additionally, make sure to network and build relationships, then actively utilize those connections to support your journey.

How did Eller prepare you for this experience?

Eller prepared me by teaching me how to network effectively, building genuine, personal connections and maintaining them over time. It also instilled professionalism in me, from how to conduct myself in a professional setting and dress appropriately, to delivering high-quality work. Additionally, Eller helped me develop strong time management skills and supported my overall professional growth, which was essential in securing my internship.
