Kamryn Smith '24 BSBA (Business Management & Dance) was a Store Management Intern at Macy’s in Phoenix, AZ.

What was the process for getting this internship, job, or summer experience?

I came across the internship through Handshake. The application process consisted of a Zoom interview with a store manager, and a second interview with the recruiter. After the second interview, I received an offer as the only intern in the state of Arizona!

What was a typical day like?

A typical day began with a round-up with the leadership team at Macy’s. Next, I would be given a task such as marking down prices or directing colleagues. Then, we would have mandatory meetings for scheduling colleagues, discussing store layouts, receiving new inventory, and planning out the day. Lastly, I would spend time working on my final project, which involved creating my own plan for driving sales for a specific family of business.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

I am such a people person, so I enjoyed communicating with colleagues and customers the most. When a difficult situation arose, such as a register not working, I enjoyed helping colleagues solve the problem in order to successfully make the sale. Additionally, I was able to help customers in exciting ways. For example, I helped a groom find a suit for his wedding, and a teen find the right jacket for an interview.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

At the end of my internship, I was tasked with creating a 3 part plan for driving sales in Men’s Tailored. As a result, I was able to prepare a presentation about ways to improve the area. After collaborating with the leadership team, we decided that the biggest problem areas arose from inaccurate signage, unorganized sizing, and the lack of colleagues available. My presentation included mock sign ideas, tips for organizing by size, and reasons to assign more employees to the area.

What did you find most challenging?

The most challenging aspect of my internship was understanding the acronyms and language used frequently by the managers. Additionally, since my internship was only 8 weeks, I was unable to completely understand the sales data and interpret it.

What did you learn?

I learned how to be a personable leader. From listening to how managers are able to successfully execute their goals, I noticed how the tone of their voice and enthusiasm made the biggest impact.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar experience, or advice for future students to be successful?

This position was extremely beneficial to me, because I hope to start my own business someday. Although I am not particularly interested in retail, I gained valuable management experience. The only advice I would give to other students is that if you are looking for a more creative position, Macy’s headquarters may be a better fit for you.

How did Eller prepare you for this experience?

My BCOM class prepared me the most for this experience. My visual design skills and presentation skills were incredibly successful for my final project due to my BCOM class. Eller prepares students well for public speaking, and I am extremely thankful it is emphasized in our curriculum.

Did you feel supported by the company or organization you worked with?

The managers that I worked with were very encouraging. When I made mistakes, they were very understanding and helpful. I appreciated how I was able to get to know them on a personal level as well. Oftentimes we would take lunch breaks together and get to know each other!
