Paola Mendivil '25 BSBA (Finance) was a CIB Risk Analyst at JPMorgan Chase & Co in New York, New York.

What was the process for getting this internship, job, or summer experience?

The process of getting this internship was intense because you apply and begin the process a year and a half before the actual internship will take place. I had an online interview followed by a super day. I was flown out by the company for my super day to have three back-to-back in person interviews. I heard back the next day that I will be receiving an offer for the following summer. However, a lot of preparation took place beforehand to ensure I was ready.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

My favorite part of the experience was networking. The firm is huge, and they cover so many different areas in the finance sector that you can really branch out too many different teams to learn more and build your network. The networking was also highly encouraged by the firm which I appreciated.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it:

My big project was giving senior management a presentation on Non-Qualifying Mortgages specifically taking a closer look at debt service coverage ratio investor loans. Within my project I gave an overview of the sector and ran a stress scenario assumption to better understand how much risk the firm will be taking on if they invested in DSCR investor loans.

What did you learn?

I was able to learn a lot about the housing market and how securitization works. I got a better understanding of how the investment portfolio works for JPMorgan Chase and what the two different lines of defense are. I also got to understand why big banks only invest in triple AAA tranches and how they are the most secure investments in securitizations. The underwriting that takes place for these investments are specific and I was able to learn more about the models they use.
