James Muzzy '63 '64 MBA, Selected as 2026 Alumni of the Year

Each year, the University of Arizona honors alumni whose careers and service exemplify leadership, civic engagement and a lasting commitment to the university community. For 2026, the Eller College of Management’s Alumni of the Year is James Muzzy ’63, ’64 MBA.

Muzzy is a pioneering financial executive and philanthropist, widely known as a co-founder of Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO), one of the world’s most influential fixed-income investment firms. Over a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, he helped shape institutional asset management through innovation, ethical leadership and an unwavering focus on client service.

A proud Wildcat, Muzzy earned both his bachelor’s degree and MBA from the University of Arizona. In recognition of his professional achievements and lifelong dedication to philanthropy, the university awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 2016.

Muzzy began his career as an industrial engineer at Owens-Illinois Glass before transitioning to finance at Dean Witter & Co. in 1967. In 1971, he co-founded PIMCO, where he later served as managing director, leading global marketing and institutional client relations. Under his leadership, the firm grew into a global investment leader managing more than $750 billion in assets at the time of his retirement in 2009.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Muzzy has remained deeply committed to giving back. At the U of A, he has supported scholarships, student success initiatives and academic excellence. He is also an emeritus member of the Eller National Board of Advisors, served on the board of the Orange County Museum of Art and established a private foundation in 2004 focused on expanding access to education, health care and the arts.

Muzzy’s legacy reflects professional excellence, principled leadership and a lifelong commitment to empowering future generations. The University of Arizona Alumni Association is pleased to name him the 2026 Alumni of the Year for the Eller College of Management.

Muzzy, along with the other 2026 Alumni of the Year Award recipients, will be honored at the Alumni of the Year Awards Ceremony on February 13 at the Student Union Memorial Center.
