Khirin Dacanay is a MIS and Accounting major graduating in the spring of 2022.  This summer he interned with Deloitte as an Advisory Intern in Costa Mesa, California.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

Overall, my internship experience with Deloitte was more than I could have asked for. They provided me with so many resources to grow, and they were always helpful when I needed it. My favorite part of the internship was the mentorship aspect. I was assigned a senior manager to be my coach and a senior consultant to be my onboarding advisor. Throughout the entire internship, I had many check-ins with my mentors. They were able to guide me through the internship and help me discover things about my career as a whole. Beyond my assigned mentors I feel like everyone that I met senior to myself served to mentor me in some way. The managers and seniors on my project always took extra time to help me and make sure that I was understanding and answer questions. Overall, I loved the honesty and willingness to help me succeed that was demonstrated by everyone at Deloitte.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

At Deloitte, they truly treat interns as if they were newly hired analysts. It is simultaneously challenging and exciting to be given real responsibilities as an intern. I was fortunate enough to work on two large projects during my time as an intern. My first project was a large financial services client, and my team and I were analyzing the IT environment. I got a good look at how systems function within an organization and I was even able to use some fundamentals from my MIS classes like networking. After that, I served a large client in the restaurant industry and did similar work. I enjoyed being able to work on big-name clients and make an impact for them!

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar experience, or advice for future students to be successful?

My advice for students would be to get involved and explore options! Getting involved at Eller helped me discover career paths and pursue them. It's great for your resume, and it helps you feel like you're a part of the Business School community.

How did Eller prepare you for this experience?

Eller definitely did a great job of preparing me for this internship! The top-notch programs gave me the skills that I needed to be successful. Additionally, the focus on group work as well as my time working with business communications allowed me to be effective in my job. The Advanced Zipperman Association and Zipperman Scholars Program was also a huge motivator. I learned industry-specific info about consulting and met many talented friends.
