Sometimes the most rewarding paths are the ones we least expect. For Sophie Anderson ’24 BSBA (MIS), ’25 MSM, her journey at the Eller College of Management is a testament to embracing unexpected opportunities and making the most of them.

"I always say that I didn't choose the U of A, it chose me," Anderson reflects. Originally planning to attend school on the East Coast, she discovered the University of Arizona through its merit scholarship opportunities. What started as a practical decision evolved into a transformative academic journey that would span two degrees in just four years.

The transition to college wasn't without its challenges. Coming from a small high school, Anderson arrived at U of A knowing no one and uncertain about her path. However, Eller's collaborative environment helped her develop crucial skills in team dynamics and relationship building. "Through group projects, case competitions, and leadership roles, I've learned how to put myself out there, collaborate with others, and form strong professional and personal relationships," she says.

Anderson's academic path exemplifies adaptability. Initially interested in Computer Science, she pivoted to Pre-Business just before starting college. This led her to discover Management Information Systems (MIS), which balanced her interest in coding with foundational business knowledge. Thanks to AP credits from high school, she completed her undergraduate degree in three years, combining an MIS major with a Spanish minor.

But her experience extends far beyond the classroom. Since her first year, she has been deeply involved in the Eller college community, participating in organizations like Eller Rising Professionals and SPARK. Her leadership roles have been particularly impactful — she currently serves as the co-president of the Arizona Consulting Club, where she leads bi-weekly meetings to educate students about opportunities in the consulting industry and is organizing the club's annual networking trip to New York City to connect students with top consulting firms.

Perhaps her most significant contribution to Eller's community is co-founding the Arizona Strategy Program, a selective mentorship initiative preparing students for careers in management and strategy consulting. "Developing the curriculum and shaping an initiative that could become a lasting part of Eller has been incredibly fulfilling," says Anderson. "But the most rewarding part is seeing our students grow and succeed."

Anderson's graduate studies in the Masters in Marketing (MSM) program have further refined her skillset, particularly in areas crucial for consulting. The program's case-based curriculum has strengthened her strategic decision-making abilities, while numerous presentation opportunities have enhanced her public speaking skills.

Professional development has been a key focus throughout Anderson's time at Eller. She successfully secured a position with Boston Consulting Group as an associate and credits this achievement to the strong network she built, particularly with peers and alumni who carved their own paths into consulting.

For students just beginning their college careers, Anderson offers wisdom gained from her experience: "Focus on finding the path that feels right for you," she adds. "It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the pressure of others asking about internships and future plans, but the most important thing is to pursue what truly excites you, rather than what you think you should do."

As Anderson prepares to move to Nashville and begin her consulting career, she carries with her not just academic achievements, but the confidence to thrive in new environments—a skill she developed through her Eller experience. Her story serves as an inspiring example of how embracing unexpected opportunities and actively engaging with one's academic community can lead to extraordinary outcomes.

"While this isn't the path I originally envisioned for myself, I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunities I've had and the incredible community I've built here."

As she steps into her role at BCG, she exemplifies how Eller's combination of rigorous academics, leadership opportunities, and community engagement prepares students for success in the competitive world of business consulting.
