Sands Computing Lab

McClelland Hall 135

The Sands Computing Lab has open access Monday thru Friday from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. CatCard access is required at all times. Undergraduate and graduate students of the Eller College have access to these computing facilities located in McClelland Hall 135. The Sands Lab is equipped with 17 computer stations and one WEPA print stations. 

Graduate Computing Lab

McClelland Hall 335

The Graduate Computing Lab is only accessible by graduate students of the Eller College and is located in McClelland Hall 335. CatCard access is required at all times. The Grad Lab is equipped with: six group work areas, eight Bloomberg terminals, laptop docking stations, group study areas and cubicles with tables and whiteboards . 

Lab Printing

Printing from lab computers is now accomplished through UA WEPA print stations.  One WEPA print station is located within the SANDS Lab, another station is located to the east of the SANDS lab in the hall corridor.   Additionally, a WEPA print station is located outside of the Graduate Lab in the corridor.

Lab Policy

Policy

All student users of the lab are expected to abide by the following policies in addition to the University of Arizona Student Policies and Codes and the University of Arizona Information Technology Policies.

• ACADEMICALLY APPROPRIATE USE ONLY

Inappropriate use includes, but is not limited to:

• Playing electronic games
• SPAM - Sending unsolicited email via email, newsgroups, listservs, etc..
• Downloading non-academic and/or illegal software/content from the Internet
• Gaining OR attempting to gain access to accounts or files without the owner's permission on any computer or network system
• Taking actions which threaten the security of the computer system and/or destroy or damage computer resources; wasting computer resources
• SAVING WORK - Computing Lab workstations are setup to allow the user temporary disk space for saving work. This temporary disk space area IS NOT BACKED UP and is NOT SAVED OR MONITORED. Therefore, it is the user's responsibility to save any work or pertinent files to a removable storage media. USB ports may be used to attach additional removable storage devices such as memory sticks and USB drives. Users should NOT expect that any files saved to the temporary disk space area will subsequently be available. 

Eller IT is not responsible for any loss of work resulting from equipment failure or negligence (on the part of the user) to store pertinent work to removable storage devices. Eller IT is also not responsible for any malicious or otherwise unwarranted act of a lab user to copy or remove files from the temporary disk space area.

Eller IT reserves the right to regularly clean temporary disk space areas of files placed in those areas by Lab users. Unless expressly necessary, any such temporary disk space maintenance will occur during hours in which the computing lab is closed.

• HARASSMENT or INTIMIDATION - Do not use computer systems to send, post, or display offensive, abusive, slanderous, vulgar, or defamatory messages, text, graphics or images. This includes harassment and intimidation of individuals on the basis of race, sex, gender, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, etc.
• TAMPERING WITH LAB COMPUTERS - Do not tamper with any of the computer equipment in the labs for ANY reason. Do not disconnect the computers from the network or from the power outlets for any reason. Some of our labs are equipped for docking laptops with power and network connections available for use. Do not disconnect our equipment so that you can use your own! Doing so will result in a loss of your lab privileges. 
• SOFTWARE USE / PIRACY - Software piracy (making unauthorized copies of any copyright protected software, regardless of source) is against the law! Students caught pirating software in a lab will be warned and the action will be disallowed. If such pirating persists the individual(s) involved in the illegal action will lose the privilege of lab use and be asked to leave the lab immediately.
• PERSONAL SOFTWARE USE - The loading of personal software onto a lab computer is strictly prohibited.  Unauthorized/unsupported software will be removed from the workstation without prior notice. User beware! In addition, student files may be deleted without notice. It is the student's responsibility to backup his/her own files.  Software for course usage must be requested by the course instructor.
• VIRUSES - Software viruses can devastate a lab. All labs have some virus detection software in place. If a virus is discovered in a lab, notify the lab monitor immediately! DO NOT relocate to a different workstation without first checking your removable storage for viruses. 
• ACCESS - Eller IT Computing Labs are intended for Eller College faculty, staff, and students only within designated hours. 
• FOOD AND DRINK - Absolutely NO food or drink is allowed in the lab by lab users. Accidental spillage has accounted for significant expenditures to repair equipment and clean up the mess. 
• SMOKING - Smoking in state buildings is prohibited except in designated areas. There are no such designated areas inside the labs.
