The Eller College Launches the Chen-Chow Bear Down Scholarship
Despite the unprecedented climate that came with 2020, two gracious Eller College of Management donors have made it clear that student success always come first.
Hsinchun Chen, UA Regents’ Professor of MIS and Thomas R. Brown Chair in Management and Technology in the Eller College of Management, and his wife Hsiao-Hui (Sherry) Chow, research professor of medicine at the University of Arizona Cancer Center, established the Chen-Chow Bear Down Scholarship in Fall 2020, with the goal of engaging underrepresented students from Native Nations in the Eller College’s Management Information Systems (MIS) department.

Chen has served the MIS department and the University for more than 30 years and is a prolific researcher. Chow has led the cancer center’s Analytical Chemistry Shared Resource since 2001 and co-led the Cancer Prevention and Control program since 2015.
Both Chen and Chow have worked with Native American students in health and technology at the university for many years and have a strong affinity with Native American culture and heritage.
“Sherry and I are thrilled to be involved in this exciting program,” says Chen. “Both of us came to Tucson as freshly minted PhD’s and joined as faculty at Eller and the Health Science College more than 30 years ago. We have grown professionally at the university and have raised a family here with two beautiful children. We are honored to be able to contribute to the university/Eller and the Arizona community through the Bear Down Scholars (BDS) Program at this stage of our career. We look forward to interacting with the BDS students and faculty in the future.”
The Chen-Chow Bear Down Scholarship is part of the Bear Down Scholars Program that provides opportunities for scholarship recipients to engage in activities designed to help them be successful at Eller and to increase their understanding of what MIS is and what a job in MIS might look like.

Students of Native American descent are encouraged to apply on Scholarship Universe, regardless of their current GPA.
The first cohort of students were accepted in fall of 2020 and will be an integral part to the establishment and success of the Bear Down Scholars Program.
