Internship Spotlight: Noah Markowitz, Domo

Noah Markowitz is a MIS/OSCM major graduating in the spring of 2022.  This summer he interned with Domo as a Program Manager in American Fork, Utah. 

What was a typical day like?

A typical day for me included speaking to clients, managing tasks in Jira, and speaking with our internal team to gather information and manage tasks.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

I loved how hands on everything was. Many of my friends did coffee runs and other tedious tasks during their internships, but Domo gave me the opportunity to jump right into the deep end and start working on high-level projects.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

I had the opportunity to work closely with a company that we were building a COVID-19 vaccination app for. The app was actually two apps: one would allow patients to schedule a vaccination appointment and the other would allow staff to manage these appointments. I would speak to the clients about the functionality of the app and what they wanted it to do and look like. Then work with designers and developers to make those changes happen. This project is extremely fast paced since the app needs to follow the CDC guidelines for certain features and those guidelines change rapidly.

What did you find most challenging?

I think the most challenging part was jumping in and learning everything I needed to in order to do my job successfully. The COVID-19 vaccination app I wrote about above is a massive project and began a little while before I joined the team so I had a lot to catch up on.

What did you learn?

I learned a lot of things this summer but one of the most crucial was communication. More specifically, how to reach out and speak to clients. A large part of my job is keeping clients informed about their projects, asking questions when I have them, and scheduling meetings to discuss certain topics. To do this, it is important to be professional and take it seriously. This means detailed update emails that lay everything out for the client, asking questions, to make sure that everyone is on the same page, and bringing the right people into meetings to talk about subjects that they are experts on.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar experience, or advice for future students to be successful?

My advice would be to learn as much as you can during this time and show the company that you are a committed intern who wants to learn. This allows you to understand the position as much as possible and it also shows your boss that you are serious. If they see you taking this seriously, they may just hire you during the year and/or after you graduate.

Anything else you would like to share about your summer experience?

After the summer had finished, Domo asked me to stay on during the year. In other words, I will be continuing as a Program Manager for Domo while I am at school.
