Internship Spotlight: Juan Pablo Iruretagoyena, JP Morgan Chase & Co.

Juan Pablo Iruretagoyena is a Finance and MIS major graduating in the Spring of 2022.  This summer he interned with JP Morgan Chase & Co. as an Internal Audit Summer Analyst  in Plano, Texas.

What was a typical day like?

I logged in at 6 a.m. (9am ET), and usually spent the first couple hours responding to emails, completing ongoing tasks, and attending any case study team meetings I had, which happened around 1-2 times every week. At around 8 - 9 a.m. (11 - 12 ET), I'd attend training zoom sessions, team meetings, and reach out to my managers to update them and ask them if I could help them or anyone in their team with something either via message or zoom call. Lunch for me was at 11 a.m. (2 p.m. ET) and lasted either 30 or 60 minutes, depending on the schedule for that day. After work, I'd work on newly assigned tasks, hop on zoom calls for walkthroughs to learn about the project I was working on and how to execute it, and also either attend or schedule social coffee chats to get to know people.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

Talking to leaders at the firm and learning from them. When you're working at a big bank, one's expectations can be to wait years until you can sit down to talk with a MD. So it was amazing how approachable and willing to help every leader at the firm was. Definitely a privilege.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

We had to identify 3 risks that the J.P. Morgan Investing App could face. Then, select one of those risks and dig deeper into it. We had to propose a control implementation to mitigate or eliminate that risk. We also had to describe our control breakdown (what happens if the control breaks), and how we would perform testing.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar experience, or advice for future students to be successful?

Listen to your coaches at Eller, they have coached generations before you. Reach out to Eller alumni. I can't stress enough how much they want to help you. They will not give you a job, but will absolutely put you a step ahead, and that's where you have to take what you've learned in the program to impress the people. Once you get your desired job, perform to your best. You are representing the Eller college, make sure to do it the best way.
