Accounting PhD Teaching Expectations
Most tenure-track faculty positions in accounting expect qualified candidates to demonstrate excellence in the classroom.
Therefore, Arizona’s Doctoral Program in Accounting provides its PhD students with the opportunity to acquire classroom experience in order to increase the candidate’s confidence, yield teaching evaluations for eventual faculty position applications and reduce the time needed to prepare for teaching when the student begins his or her first faculty appointment.
Students in our program typically serve as a teaching assistant for multiple semesters and teach one class as a primary instructor. This frequently occurs during the summer between the first and second years in the PhD program. Students may teach more based on their standing, interest and course availability.
Overall, however, Arizona’s accounting PhD program is not a teaching program. Our primary focus is to train you to conduct high-quality research as this will be a key factor to your future success as an accounting academic.
