Eller’s Economic and Business Research Center Director Cited in The Washington Post
George Hammond, director of the Economic and Business Research Center (EBRC) in the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona, was cited in a July 21 Washington Post article on the health and economic implications of Arizona’s economic reopening. Additionally, COVID-19 research from the EBRC was referenced in a July 20 Washington Post article on the same topic.
The first article compares and contrasts the precautions and measures that New Mexico and Arizona have made in an attempt to navigate the COVID-19 outbreak. Citing Hammond, the article predicts Arizona’s potential economic future: “The Cares Act significantly cushioned Arizona from the full effect of the downturn. It seems likely, then, that Arizona’s plight will worsen if Congress fails to extend additional unemployment insurance benefits before they expire this month.”
The second article spoke on the same topic, using data and statistics from the EBRC as support: “Total taxable sales fell by about 6 percent in March and more than 16 percent in April, compared with the same periods a year earlier, depriving businesses of much-needed income.”
The Economic and Business Research Center provides Arizona’s citizens, educators, business leaders and decision makers with applied economic research, forecasts and analysis of trends that impact business success and quality of life in Arizona and is directed by George Hammond. Hammond has designed, built and used economic models to produce forecasts for state and local economies and completed regional economic studies on topics including economic and workforce development and the impact of higher education on human capital accumulation.
