Internship Spotlight – Irving Green, Texas Instruments

Irving Green is an Accounting and MIS major set to graduate in May 2020.  This summer he interned for Texas Instruments as a Distribution Accounting Intern in Dallas, Texas.

How did you get this internship?

I took the alternative spring break trip with Eller in 2018 and TI was one of the companies we visited. I made a good connection with a recruiter and left my resume. I then got a call for a phone interview, a video interview and then an offer.

What was a typical day like?

Working on my projects, talking to people in my department and other departments to make connections and get answers to questions regarding my projects. It was very people oriented and lots of meetings, events, networking.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

My favorite part was getting to know other interns from other universities and talking about their projects for the summer, their experience so far and going exploring with them.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

I had to automate complicated calculations that were previously done in Excel by using a new software called Alteryx that only one other department was using at the moment. My task was to understand the current process and recreate it with the new software. The point of recreating it was because since the data was 400,000 line items long, it would often crash Excel, and so Alteryx was a good alternative to not only automate the process, but get it done in the background (saving twice as much time). I had to create a workflow using this new software. Even though it took a long time (about a month) since the current process was very hard for me to understand and my manager was only there for about a week for me to ask questions, I had to pretty much figure it out on my own.

What did you find most challenging about your internship?

Getting to know the software, processes of TI as well as knowing what information I could disclose to other departments and what I couldn’t talk about.
