Resume Guidelines

  • Resumes should be 1 page. Appearance should be professional and conservative.
  • Content should not be overcrowded, allowing for white space.
  • Section headings should stand out (increased font size/bolding) and should be aligned on the left side.
  • Dates should go on the right.
  • No smaller than 10 point font and use standard fonts and Sans Serif Fonts, like Arial, Calibri, Garamond, or Helvetica. Try to avoid Times New Roman as it is overused.

  • Resume headings are organized in order of importance for the needs of the job you are applying for and industry.
  •  List experience in reverse chronological order (most recent to least recent).
  •  Content and experiences are listed consistently, such as headings, job titles, company names and dates.
  •  Resume is clearly tailored to the desired position, using specific keywords from the job description.
  •  Personal pronouns, such as “I” and “me” are not included.
  •  No spelling and grammar mistakes.

  • Include your first and last name (large font and bold), phone number, professional email address, and LinkedIn URL.

  • Tailor your summary for each position.
  • Include what you can offer the employer, not what they can do for you.

  • Include the institution name, location, degree title, graduation date, and GPA if above 3.5.
  • Relevant coursework is optional.
  • Significant educational achievements, honors, etc. could be listed here as well.

  • Include especially if targeting specialized position or roles that requires technical skills.
  • List out technical skills organized by category. Ensure this is clear and easy to read.
  • Include what is most relevant to the position you are applying for.

  • Describe your experiences using clear and well-defined bullet point phrases, instead of paragraph descriptions.
  • Start your bullet points with strong action verbs in the correct verb tense.
  • Your bullet points should describe your responsibilities in a way that shows results and accomplishments.
  • Show what you have achieved, not just what you have done.
  • Ensure the information you include relates to the career you are seeking.
  • Academic projects that are relevant can be included or listed in their own section.

  • Include relevant leadership roles, extracurricular activities, community service, and volunteer work with dates.
  • Accomplishments and duties should be clearly stated.

  • Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen and process applicants’ resumes and cove letters.
  • ATS scans for keywords and gives candidates a ranking based on how their documents align with the job description.
  • Your resume and cover letter should mirror the language in the job description and follow ATS guidelines: no templates, boxes, or borders, using standard margins and fonts, and submitting as a PDF.
