Meet the 23 ventures to attend Feb. 14 McGuire Innovation Expo, a showcase of McGuire’s New Venture Development Program students
University of Arizona’s McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship is hosting its third McGuire Innovation Expo 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 14 on the UA Mall by the student union. The tradeshow, a gathering of students from McGuire’s New Venture Development Program includes 23 student new ventures, is free and open to the public.
“The Innovation Expo is a great event for student teams to showcase their ventures to the public for the first time,” said McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship Interim Director Rick Yngve. “Our students in the New Venture Development Program have been working diligently over the past six months to develop their business venture from the ground up. The Innovation Expo is an exciting and interactive day on the UA Mall that you won’t want to miss!”
There will be 23 booths showcasing cross-disciplinary student startup teams from the UA Eller College of Management’s McGuire New Venture Development Program. These students have spent six months receiving intensive experiential education that engages them in the process of moving innovation from an early-stage idea to a sustainable launch-ready venture. More information can be found on the McGuire Center website.
Student venture team, ReCreate, is focused on their environmental impact by producing modern supplies for the Earth’s conscious crafter. Their mission is to reduce waste through renewable raw materials. ReCreate wants to inspire the 117 million crafters in the United States to minimize their environmental impact while keeping up with contemporary trends. “The best part about our venture, ReCreate, is our ability to educate consumers about how they can take care of the planet through their hobbies. We're excited to share our love for crafts on February 14th!” said Jeremeiah Whiteside, Finance and Entrepreneurship Student, University of Arizona.
Four awards will be given at this year's Innovation Expo:
- The Booth Appeal Award ($500) will go to the team with the most creative and visually interesting booth.
- The Communication & Fluency Award ($500) will be given to the team that is able to communicate their idea in the most effective way.
- The Microsoft Social Impact Award ($500) will be awarded to the team that is able to most effectively incorporate corporate social responsibility strategies into their venture, and how well they explain their company’s community and stakeholder impact.
- The Investors’ Choice Award ($500) is voted on by expo visitors using “McGuire Bucks”, which are distributed to students and community members who check in at the McGuire Center Welcome Booth.
Microsoft, the McGuire Center’s social innovation sponsor for the event, is supporting the expo by awarding the Microsoft Social Impact Award. This award recognizes the team who most effectively and innovatively incorporates corporate social responsibility strategies into their venture, is able to relate their venture’s social impact to their local community and is able to articulate how they will extend the reach of their social impact as their venture grows.
Microsoft’s datacenter community development team is committed to engaging university students through Microsoft’s social impact stories and partnering to make a positive social impact on the world.
