AI Lab Funding

ai lab Funding

The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory is funded almost in its entirety by grants and contracts it wins through competitive, peer-review processes.

Much of the Lab's current and past funding has come from federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Other funding has come through contracts, subawards, and other mechanisms. The AI Lab has received more than $50 million in research funding from 100+ grants, awards, and contracts, with more than 50 grants from NSF.  NSF is an independent federal agency which has as its mission the promotion of science, the advancement of national health, and the protection of the nation's security. NSF serves as a major source of funding for U.S. colleges and universities, particularly for computer and information sciences, mathematics, and the social sciences.

NIH is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). It serves as the primary federal agency for supporting medical research in academic and other research settings. It has provided excellent funding support for the Lab's work in bioinformatics and medical informatics.

The funding the Lab has received through NSF, NIH, and other government and non-government entities has enabled the Lab to become a well-recognized major research group in information systems research. By continually expanding the boundaries of our research and pursuing new and emerging areas of science, we have been able to contribute notable innovations in many arenas of information science, including e-commerce, intelligence and security informatics (ISI), terrorism informatics, digital library and digital government, and bio- and medical informatics and smart health. Please peruse the "Research" section of the Lab's website to examine the results made possible by our sponsors.
