Andrea Okonkwo is a Marketing and MIS double major and will graduate in May of 2019.  She interned this summer for Amazon as the Area Manager Intern in Irving, Texas.

How did you get this internship? I applied for this internship through Handshake.com where I was then directed to apply directly on the Amazon careers website. After submitting my application, I was then asked to complete two video interviews. After about a week, I was called and told that they wanted to offer me the internship.

What was a typical day like? A typical day would entail first analyzing the amount of volume needed to produce in a day, and then calculating how many workers we needed for that sortation time. Once that was established, we then managed the floor by moving associates to lanes that needed the most help, providing associates with the materials needed to work, and recording the data metrics into a SharePoint excel sheet. This was a very labor intensive job as I was constantly walking (about 5-10 miles a day), pushing pallets, and picking up boxes.

What was your favorite part of the experience? My favorite part of this experience was working with my team of other managers to reach our daily volume goals.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below: For my project, I was asked to come up with a recycling program at our sortation center. This required me to reach out to many recycling and waste companies to see what kind of services they offered.

What did you find most challenging about your internship? The most challenging part of this internship was finding time to work on my project while also carrying out my daily responsibilities as an Area Manager.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship? Don’t stop applying! I applied to a countless amount internships but I was only offered one internship.

How did Eller prepare you for your internship? The class MIS 373 related to a lot of the tasks I did with this internship. Also, the management classes I have taken have helped me when taking on the role as an Area Manager.

Did your internship employer provide housing or transportation assistance? My employer provided transportation or financially supplemented my transportation during the internship and also provided housing assistance.

Anything else you would like to share about your internship experience? This is a very good internship for students interested in Operations Management.
