MIS 516 Information Security Risk Management 
MIS 517 Systems Security Management 

With the completion of the courses above, students are also eligible for:

  • CPE units for CISSP, ISSAP, ISSEP, ISSMP, CAP and SSCP designation(s). These designations are offered by (ISC)².
  • CPE units for CISM and CRISC designations which are offered by ISACA.
  • One year of qualified work experience towards the Certified Information Security Manager® (CISM®) designation.*

* As of May 17, 2012, the University of Arizona, Department of Management Information Systems, Eller College of Management, Security Graduate Certificate as submitted to ISACA was found to be in alignment with the ISACA® Model Curriculum for Information Security Management, 2nd Edition. Graduates of this program qualify for one year work experience toward the Certified Information Security Manager® (CISM®) designation

Enterprise Information Security Certificate Courses and Course Calendar

Certificate Courses

To obtain a graduate Enterprise Information Security Certificate, you'll take three 3-unit online graduate MIS courses (9 units total):

This course exposes the student to a broad range of computer systems and information security topics. It is designed to provide a general knowledge of measures to insure confidentiality, availability, and integrity of information systems. Topics range from hardware, software and network security to INFOSEC, OPSEC and NSTISS overviews. Components include national policy, threats, countermeasures, and risk management among others.

The objective of our MIS 516 course is to provide students a thorough and operational knowledge of information security so that this critical area is recognized as a management issue and not an IT issue. As the course topics within our MIS 516 syllabus have been directly "mapped" against the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) certification requirements for National Training Standard for Information System Security for professionals.

The information security arena contains a broad array of multi-level models for assessing, planning, implementing and monitoring the mitigation of security risks. At the very core of this information security spectrum are the actual system and network devices which store, manage, transmit and secure information. This course is designed to provide a working knowledge of issues and techniques surrounding the proper safeguarding of operating systems and related components. Filled with Information Assurance topics, this course offers a solid base for system administrators and technical managers.

Technology Requirements

Online Graduate Certificate students will be using a variety of online applications including discussion boards and chats. Speakers, a microphone and an external webcam with at least a five-foot USB cord are also required for your proctored exams. Please ensure that your equipment meets the following technical requirements:

Requirements

  • 4-year bachelor's degree (domestic) or U.S. comparable bachelor's degree (international)
  • Undergraduate 3.0 GPA (4.0 scale)
  • TOEFL minimum score of 90 (internet-based testing, international students only)
  • 1 letter of recommendation (the application system will ask for recommenders' contact information and it will send out the requests for you online.)
  • Purpose of Graduate Study. A document stating your goals and objectives for gaining this certificate and how obtaining this certificate will impact your career path. (uploaded during the application process.

Follow the steps below to submit your application for certificate admission:

Step 1: Fill out your online application

Fill out your application online. This is done through the University of Arizona Graduate College system.

Below are the application procedures. We highly recommend that you print out these instructions and follow them as you fill out your application:

  1. Go to the Graduate College's online application system. (https://apply.grad.arizona.edu/users/login)
  2. Create an account if you have not done so already. After submitting your e-mail address, you will receive an email message with instructions on how to start the application process.
  3. After your account is created, select the “term” in which you are applying.
  4. Select “certificate” for type of application.
  5. Choose either "Business Intelligence and Analytics" or "Enterprise Information Security" as the program of study.
  6. Choose the semester you would like to begin your studies (view course schedule, above).
  7. Leave the “UA Site” section blank.
  8. If appropriate fill out the "Sponsor/Program Affiliation" section.
  9. Complete the rest of the application by following the prompts. You will be able to upload copies of your transcript(s), and, if appropriate, your TOEFL scores during the online application process.
  10. Pay the application fee.
